Final MagnEFi network meeting, Eindhoven

The final MagnEFi network event took place at TU/e in Eindhoven from 12-17 March 2023. During this event, MagnEFi ESRs presented their latest research work and findings. The event was open to non MagnEFi researchers within the university. ESRs also engaged in a public outreach activity with a journalist from the university newspaper CURSOR (link provided here when available) and undertook training in navigating job interviews for future employment opportunities. They received feedback on cvs and cover letters for academic and industry positions and participated in mock job interviews with the object of providing experience in how to prepare for job interviews in their future careers. They also visited the ASML headquarters in Veldhoven where they received feedback on their cvs from a company recruiter. During this final network event, the group had the opportunity to visit the Department of Applied Physics FNA labs and the innovation space at TU/e. Finally, both PIs and ESRs reflected on the three years of the MagnEFi ESR fellowships to identify the key positive aspects of the training program and to think about possible improvements for future networks.

MagnEFi Conference Crete 2022 (10-14 October)

The MagnEFi2022 conference, organised by MagnEFi ESRs, covers a wide range of cutting-edge topics in magnetism and magnetic materials research, ranging from the fundamental to the applied. The topics cut across the entire field of magnetism, such as spintronic phenomena, electric field control of magnetism, nonlinear effects and spintronic devices. The variety of the content is enriched by the presence of career oriented workshops.

The conference programme is available on the conference website here: https://magneficonference2022.c2n.universite-paris-saclay.fr

Joint network meeting with MSCA ITN BeMAGIC

The MagnEFi team met with the MSCA ITN BeMagic team for a joint network event in Aalto, Finland from 13-17 June 2022. A number of experts in the field provided invited talks and ESRs from both networks gave presentations about their research projects. A program for the event can be found here.

Network meeting and industrial workshop, JGU

This in-person MagnEFi network event took place at JGU Mainz from 14-18 March 2022. During this event, ESRs had the opportunity to present their research to date and to attend training courses in both hard and soft skills. These courses included:

  • Producing videos for outreach activities plus hands on training on 3 stations: Camera, Audiolab and Video Cutting
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Patent workshop and how to become a patent lawyer
  • How to write a press release
  • Sempa and X ray holography
  • Scanning probe methods
  • Semi-conductor fabrication
  • Clean room production

Soft skills training workshop, CNRS

The MagnEFi group met at CNRS, Institut Néel in Grenoble from November 23-26, 2021 for a soft-skills workshop aimed at writing for a scientific audience. This was followed by part 2 of the Collaborative Device Concept with R. Allenspach from IBM. An agenda for the event can be found here.

Joint IOP/MagnEFi school

Aimed at early stage postgraduate research students, this two-day school will provide a mixture of training and topical lectures on magnetism, spintronics and electric field effects on magnetism. It will also provide an excellent opportunity for participants to meet other members of the UK and international magnetism community. It is planned for the school to run as a hybrid event, both in-person and online, and to consist of lectures and a poster session. We hope that the event will serve to both connect and reconnect research students after the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Dates: 28th-29th October 2021

Venue: University of Leeds, U.K.

MagnEFi network event

MagnEFi ESRs and PIs held their first in-person network event in Turin, Italy from October 24-27, 2021. The meeting, originally scheduled to be held in the UK, was moved to Italy due to COVID related travel restrictions. ESRs had the opportunity to present their research to date and to discuss possible future collaborations. They also took part in a Collaborative Device Concepts workshop and will present their ideas to an IP expert at the next network event. A PI meeting was held to discuss project progress to date, ESR concerns/questions, secondments and the upcoming periodic report to the European Commission. Some group photos from the event (courtesy of Pingzhi Li) can be found below.
